Iran has strongly condemned what it describes as the unlawful seizure of one of its commercial vessels by the United States in the Sea of Oman, according to official statements released on Friday.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations stated that the vessel, identified as Toska, was reportedly intercepted on 19 April while transporting essential dialysis equipment and medical supplies. The mission characterized the incident as a serious violation of international law, citing breaches related to the prohibition of aggression, human rights protections, and the fundamental right to life.

In its statement, Iran warned that the seizure poses a direct threat to civilian health, arguing that such actions jeopardize vulnerable patients who depend on critical medical resources. It further described the operation as coercive and unlawful, stressing that it undermines freedom of navigation and endangers lives. Tehran called for those responsible to be held accountable.

Earlier in the week, Iran formally raised the issue in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council.

Responding to the development, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the organization does not have confirmed details regarding the vessel’s cargo. However, he expressed concern over the broader pattern of maritime seizures involving both Iran and the United States in the region.

Dujarric also highlighted the humanitarian implications of ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, noting that continued restrictions are affecting not only Iran but other Gulf nations as well. He reiterated the UN’s call for the vital shipping route to be reopened to ensure the free flow of goods and reduce regional tensions.
